British weather can be very unpredictable. We are usually lucky enough to be blessed with some sun during our summer months. However, do you know how to look after and protect your floors during the summer months? And if you’re lucky enough to live in a hot climate all year round, are your floors getting the TLC they need?
In this blog, we have rounded up our top tips to help you in maintaining your floors’ condition this summer. Aside from purchasing the correct cleaning products for your floors, these tips should help you protect your flooring from further damage this summer:
Tip 1: Eliminate Direct Sunlight
This is especially crucial if you have hardwood flooring. Keep your flooring out of direct sunshine throughout the summer, whether laminated, wooden or tiled. This can help prevent it from fading and causing discolouration. Closing your office blinds is an excellent approach to protect your flooring from sun damage. Especially in busy commercial buildings which experience high footfall and increased risk of damage anyway, avoiding sun damage helps maintain the quality of your floor.
Not only will closing your blinds help keep your office cooler in the summer, but it will also massively protect your flooring from unnecessary damage.
Tip 2: Give Extra Attention To High-Traffic Areas
Typically, your high-traffic areas are places such as receptions and entrances. With the warmer months comes spending more time outside which can lead to more dust and dust being tracked inside. During the summer months, it is more likely your employees and visitors will spend more time outside where possible, so be prepared to upkeep your floors.
Dust and dirt are often the main cause of scuff and scratches on your floors. As these marks typically indent or cause a groove, they can be very tricky to conceal. To combat this, purchase doormats to place by all your main doors which lead outside. Additionally, keeping on top of the cleaning will help reduce this risk and eliminate any additional stress to already high-traffic areas.
Hoovering before mopping eliminates brushing particles and abrasives over the floor’s surface. This helps in keeping your floor exceptionally clean and maintaining its surface.
Tip 3: Monitor The Humidity Levels
Mainly aimed towards those with hardwood floors but a great tip nonetheless.
This tip is vital all year, but especially during the summer months. Air conditioning may dry up the air, and humidity levels in many parts of the country can reach dangerously high levels during the summer. Neither extreme is beneficial to your hardwood flooring. Some seasonal shrinkage or expansion of your flooring will occur; however, you may limit this by keeping your humidity levels within the suggested range of 40-60 per cent in summer and 30-50 per cent in winter. This is an important factor to consider in large commercial buildings which rely on both air conditioning and heating to remain a comfortable temperature for employees and guests.
Summer humidity levels can impact the colour and sheen of your flooring. A dehumidifier can significantly reduce humidity levels. They remove moisture from the air, preserving the shine of your flooring and reducing the likelihood of cracks forming.
