Incorporating Social Distancing Measures into Your Flooring

04th February

It’s hard to believe that just a year ago the words ‘social distancing’ were not part of our daily vocabulary. Now the 25th top English word used globally in 2020, it’s fair to say that social distancing has taken over our lives, both verbally and physically. Any shop or business that you choose to enter will now typically have social distancing floor markings in place, to protect both you as the customer and their own staff.

There are many different ways that businesses are incorporating social distancing markers into their flooring:

Tape

While using tape to outline social distancing points might not be the most sustainable or durable of methods, it is the quickest and easiest to install. With guidelines changing week in week out, it’s very likely that at some point the rules on social distancing will change whether this be to make the gap smaller or bigger. With tape, this can easily be amended with little damage to the floor, and at little cost to the business which is why businesses like hairdressers or those in hospitality are opting for tape markings, as they are opening and closing more regularly than other businesses in-line with government guidelines and so require a non-permanent method of marking.

Signs

Naturally, everywhere you look you will see a sign reminding you to practise social distancing however signage is also used on many floors like in supermarkets. The signage used is made from an ultra-thin material that sits smoothly on the floor no matter if it be a carpet surface or not and ensures a level walking surface with no tripping hazard which is important for the safety of both customers and employees.

  1. Floor Designs

With social distancing having played a prominent part in our lives for the past year and with no sign of it going anywhere anytime soon, some businesses are making the investment into designed flooring which incorporates social distancing. For example, carpet tile flooring can be designed so that every 2 metres a different coloured carpet tile is displayed, showing the designated gap in-between each person. In office spaces, each desk area could be designed with coloured carpet tiles to dedicate a certain space to a person. Although these methods may seem more permanent, if social distancing was ever cut then you would still have a brilliant designed floor that incorporates your brand colours.
