Floor Preparation & Screed

To ensure that your floor covering is applied to the highest of standards, subfloor preparation is essential so that a perfect finish is guaranteed and so that the project in question is finished on time and within budget.

Subfloor prep involves work such as installing deep fill screed, removing contaminants, grinding surfaces to reduce height and so on, which requires specialist knowledge and in-depth experience. Floor preparation is a vital step before installing any flooring material, ensuring the subfloor is in optimal condition. This process includes assessing the subfloor for damage and moisture, thoroughly cleaning it to remove debris and old adhesives, and repairing any cracks or holes. Once cleaned and repaired, a moisture barrier may be applied, followed by leveling the surface through grinding and filling. Priming the subfloor can also enhance adhesion for the subsequent screed layer.

Screeding involves applying a smooth, level layer of material over the subfloor to create a suitable base for the final flooring. This process starts with mixing cement, sand, and water, sometimes with additives, to the required specifications. The screed mix is then spread evenly over the subfloor, leveled with tools like trowels and straight edges, and compacted to remove air pockets. Proper curing is essential, usually taking 7-10 days, to ensure the screed sets correctly. Finally, the screed may be sanded or ground for the desired smoothness and levelness, readying it for the final floor covering.
