Big Energy Saving Week is a national campaign run annually in an aim to help people cut their energy bills. Many people focus on insulating the walls and roofs of a building before they think about the floors, but the importance of underfloor insulation is incredibly underestimated and can result in both high energy bills and uncomfortable floors if not done. That’s why this Big Energy Saving Week, we’re giving you three reasons why you should insulate your floors.
- Drafts are eliminated
Underfloor insulation helps eliminate drafts in buildings that are raised above the ground, or set on piers, as it will prevent any draft from entering via the gap that separates the floor and the ground. Eliminating drafts in your floors is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to save both money and energy in any type of building.
- Heat loss is prevented
Not only does insulating stop the cold air from getting in, but it also prevents the warm air inside from escaping. Insulation will impede temperature change and so less energy will be needed to keep the building warm. In a home, more than 10 per cent of an average home’s heat is lost through the floor and this can be a much higher amount with hardwood floors.
- It creates a barrier
Having a layer of insulation in the empty space between the floor and ground will help to create a vapour barrier as wooden flooring is incredibly vulnerable to moisture and will soak it up from the gap. This layer is especially important if there is a basement underneath the building that is damp.
Insulated floors don’t just save you energy and money, but they also make a building more fire resistant, prevent pipes from freezing and keep your floors warmer and more comfortable.
